Disclaimer: This has got to be my nerdiest reflection ever.
I was in Mcdonald’s Katipunan this morning, waiting for the Katipunan traffic to lessen a bit, when I decided to open my beloved University Physics book to the 33rd chapter: The Nature and Propagation of Light.
The first section discussed light’s peculiar wave-particle duality: light exists as both a particle and a wave.
In the 1600s, before bits and pieces of light were called photons (ie waves and particles coexisting) by our recent physicists, there was great debate on whether light was composed of particles or waves. It was Huygen’s wave theory versus Newton’s corpuscular theory. It was either it was just composed of waves, or it was just composed of particles.
Come 1905 and Albert Einstein will publish his Nobel Prize winning paper about the photoelectric effect. And thus, the development of the wave-particle duality of light began, and was eventually accepted. Light was described as being composed by photons: packets which exhibit BOTH wave and particle properties.
So where am I bringing you guys with this lengthy discussion of light exhibiting two very different properties at the same time?
Remember what Jesus said in John 8:12? He told us that He was the light of the world.
I was almost laughing this morning, thinking that Jesus must be one heck of a physicist. He was already talking about duality when no-one had any idea whatsoever about it.
Even though it’s very hard to comprehend and believe, as light was both wave and particle, Jesus was both God and man. We can’t accept and believe in just one side of the coin, as both of these traits coexist no matter how impossible and incomprehensible it may seem.
Anyways, I believe that just like Kuya Jess, we can also be lights of this world. Although not to the extent of being God and man at the same time (because He the is only God). We are both human and spirit.
It’s in us where soul meets body. Spirit flows within our physical self.
For me being a particle is more physical. You get to feel and see and count and separate the bits and pieces. Being a wave on the other hand is more spiritual. Waves are much harder to grasp and comprehend, but flow more harmoniously when you try to visualize them.
Let’s exhibit our particle nature, and let His presence be absorbed by the people around us. And let’s exhibit our wave nature, and let His presence grow and touch others like ripples in the water.

you have also proven that nerdiness and coolness can indeed coexist! :)
nice one, ba. :)

oi, theoretical physics ka ba? bagay ka dun! :) magandang ‘proof’ yan ng existence ng duality ah! wala pa namang copyright yan diba? :P
